I travel a lot for work, and each trip brings a slightly different experience. In this blog, I\u2019ll share some of my real-life travel moments and offer tips that have helped me make journeys smoother and more stress-free.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-purple-400-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-32693e6b8db7ff21e7d94bda49e0ceb8\">On the move: my experience travelling with a stoma<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"text-xl lg:text-xl wp-block-paragraph\">One thing I\u2019ve realised is that living with a stoma doesn\u2019t mean putting life or travel on pause. I\u2019ve taken countless flights, stayed in a variety of hotels, and passed through airports all over the world. Some trips were easy, others brought surprises but the biggest lesson I\u2019ve learned is that preparation is everything. Whether it&#8217;s a long-haul flight or a short domestic trip, these tips will help you feel confident and in control when traveling with a stoma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-purple-400-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b6d38c6af1c1090b90534b893af99545\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-purple-400-color\">Packing: better to overprepare than underpack<\/mark><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"text-xl lg:text-xl wp-block-paragraph\">When it comes to packing for my stoma, running out of supplies mid-trip is not an option. I always pack like I\u2019m going away for longer than I am, my wife always comments on how much stuff I take. One piece of advice is to call the airline and explain your situation, the airline asks a few questions and free of charge have this added to my ticket as a medical bag where I can have an additional bag with all my stoma supplies. This helps as a I can carry some supplies with me and also some in my case. (The airline has asked for evidence of my condition and a simple letter from your stoma nurse or doctor worked for me).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-purple-400-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f85ca31ba9c7471c2dc2cf8644cbb079\">My packing checklist:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-purple-checkmark\">\n<li class=\"text-xl lg:text-xl\">Double (or triple) the supplies you\u2019d normally use for the time you\u2019re away<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"text-xl lg:text-xl\">Bring a change of clothes in your hand luggage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"text-xl lg:text-xl\">Include a small, discreet travel bag for daily use<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"text-xl lg:text-xl\">Bring odour-neutralising sprays or deodorant drops<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"text-xl lg:text-xl\">Hand sanitiser and barrier wipes are a must<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"text-xl lg:text-xl\">Pro tip: Always split your supplies between carry-on and checked luggage, just in case one bag goes missing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-purple-400-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-7e6f606d6abe3853c7280eaa0173de7e\">Airport security: be calm, be ready<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"text-xl lg:text-xl wp-block-paragraph\">Airport security can be unpredictable. Sometimes it\u2019s smooth, other times a pat-down or explanation is needed. I used to dread this, but now I\u2019ve got a routine. I try to communicate with the security team straight away and let them know &#8211; before I wouldn\u2019t say anything due to being nervous, and have your medical certification with you, if you don\u2019t have one or are unsure what this is speak to your stoma nurse. This has helped me navigate airport security where English may not be their first language and the small pocket-sized document helps to explain the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"text-xl lg:text-xl wp-block-paragraph\">Other ways to make it easier:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-purple-checkmark\">\n<li class=\"text-xl lg:text-xl\">Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes that won\u2019t irritate your stoma during the flight or trigger questions during a pat-down.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"text-xl lg:text-xl\">Let the security officer know discreetly that you have a medical device. You can show them the card and ask to speak in private if needed. I\u2019ve had security staff thank me for being prepared it really does make the process faster and more respectful for everyone involved.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-purple-400-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-02ecb75385465e15c74b78667cb2977a\">Flying: what I&#8217;ve learned<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"text-xl lg:text-xl wp-block-paragraph\">Long flights used to make me anxious, especially worrying about pouch ballooning or leaks. Even to the point I would starve myself before and eat very little on the plane so I would have to do little or no bag empties this just did not help the way I felt and created me to feel unwell and at times very dehydrated, But a few adjustments changed everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"text-xl lg:text-xl wp-block-paragraph\">Top flying tips:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-purple-checkmark\">\n<li class=\"text-xl lg:text-xl\">Avoid fizzy drinks before and during the flight<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"text-xl lg:text-xl\">Empty your pouch just before boarding<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"text-xl lg:text-xl\">Wear clothes that give you easy access, just in case<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"text-xl lg:text-xl\">Choose an aisle seat if you think you\u2019ll need frequent toilet access<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"text-xl lg:text-xl\">Use fragrance drops in your bag if your worried of smells after a bag change or emptying your bag<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And remember: the cabin crew are professionals. Don\u2019t hesitate to ask for help or explain your needs if something comes up during the flight<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-purple-400-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-27bb4046a70e448c74dac6e663600fbf\">Bonus tips for smooth travels<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-purple-checkmark\">\n<li class=\"text-xl lg:text-xl\">Travel insurance: Make sure it covers pre-existing conditions and stoma-related care<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"text-xl lg:text-xl\">Stay hydrated: Especially on flights dehydration can affect your output<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"text-xl lg:text-xl\">Eat safe: Try to stick with foods you know, especially in the first couple of days<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"text-xl lg:text-xl\">Know where help is: Research local stoma support groups or clinics just in case<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"text-xl lg:text-xl wp-block-paragraph\">Travelling with a stoma takes a bit more planning, but it shouldn\u2019t hold you back. With the right mindset and some practical tools, you can go anywhere and do anything. It\u2019s not always perfect but every trip helps you learn, grow, and gain confidence.
