Support a better fit with stoma seals
Finding the right stoma seal can help improve the fit of your bag and make everyday stoma care easier. They are designed to sit around the stoma, helping to create a better seal, fill uneven skin surfaces and reduce the chance of leaks. Many people also use them to help protect the skin around the stoma from contact with output.
Different products are available to suit different needs. Some seals are mouldable, allowing you to shape them around your stoma for a close fit. Others can be stretched or trimmed to match the size and shape of your stoma. The right choice will depend on your stoma type, the shape of your abdomen and any skin concerns you may have.
If you experience frequent leaks, sore skin or difficulty getting a secure fit, trying a different type of seal may help. Your stoma care nurse can also recommend products that are suitable for your individual needs.

Frequently asked questions
What is a stoma seal?
A seal, also known as a washer or barrier ring, is a ring shaped appliance that can be applied under your baseplate to provide an extra layer of security. It’s aim is to prevent output from coming into contact with the skin around your stoma.
Why would I need a stoma seal?
Some of the most common problems ostomates tell us are about leakage and skin irritation. If you are finding output is getting under your baseplate, your baseplate is wearing away very quickly or skin is becoming itchy, sore, irritated or even broken a seal may be the solution you need to prevent this from occurring.
Other challenges you may experience that could lead to the need for a seal are listed below. You can check out our help and advice section too.
• Stoma is changing shape or size
• Adhesion issues due to irritated skin
• Watery or loose output
• Uneven skin around your stoma, creases or folds
• Stoma close to the skin, flush or retracted stoma
• Hernia
• Incorrect bag choice or baseplate sizing
• Frequently changing your bag due to baseplate wearing away
• Anxiety or fear of leaks occurring
How can I choose which stoma seal is best for me?
Most ostomy manufacturers have ostomy seals, that come in various shapes and sizes, but all have the same aim to help protect the skin for stoma output.
With so much choice, it can be difficult to decide which seal is the right one for you. We suggest thinking about the following 3 things when choosing a seal but always speak to your stoma care nurse too as they can help you choose:
Why do you need a seal?
Think about the reason you are trying a seal. If it is due to leakage or trying to extend weartime, then considering a thicker, more absorbent seal is important to absorb your output. If it is to create a more secure fit, a more mouldable seal that is flexible and easy to manipulate into the shape and size you need for your stoma is important. If you are wearing a convex bag and your stoma is closer to your skin level, a thin seal is an important consideration.
Your lifestyle
Thinking about the things you like to do may help in choosing the right seal for you. If you are very active, choosing a mouldable, flexible seal that flexes with your movements and helps with bag adhesion would be an important consideration.
Your skin
Does your skin have lots of dips or fine lines that the seal needs to be able to mould in to? Or do you have sensitive skin and therefore choosing a seal with no additional additives may be a consideration.
Can I use stoma seals with any stoma bag?
Many stoma seals and rings are compatible with both one-piece and two-piece bag systems. Always check the product information to make sure it is suitable for your stoma bag, or speak to your stoma care nurse if you need guidance.

eakin freeseal®
I was lucky to be asked to trial the eakin freeseal® before it was released. It looked good, it felt good, it was easy to use, and it 100% outperformed any expectations I had in the seal. It was a no-brainer for me.
