Staying hydrated when living with a stoma | by Ayesha
Since my stoma surgery I’ve found a huge increase in my thirst. It’s so easy to get dehydrated with an ileostomy and I try my best to prevent this, here are my top tips:
Water, water and more water
Before surgery I was good with my water intake, but now I find the smallest of tasks can cause me to become dehydrated. I make sure to have a bottle of water on my bedside cabinet before sleep each night. In the mornings, I fill my water bottle up first thing and I carry my water bottle everywhere with me: in the car, in work, at the gym etc.
Electrolytes and Dioralyte
I rely on electrolytes. If I feel a sore head coming on, or if I feel fatigued or lethargic, I’ll take an electrolyte. I feel it gives me a little boost and it’s full of vitamins and minerals.
I also find Dioralyte really helpful. If I know I have a busy weekend ahead, I’ll take a sachet before heading out. It really helps prevent a sore head.
Snacks
To prevent dehydration, I’ll increase my salt intake. I’ll add some extra salt to meals (if I feel I need it) or nibble on crisps, pretzels etc.
Output
If I’m travelling, I’ll make sure to keep an eye on my output. A higher output can increase the risk of dehydration so I’ll make sure to carry a drink with me and sip this throughout the day. I also find drinks like Lucozade Sport really helpful with a stoma.
