Yes, the bag includes a drainage connection designed to be used with a compatible night drainage or leg bag, helping support your overnight routine.
If you are experiencing issues with your bag not sticking to your skin on application, it may be due to your skin not being dry enough.
Here are some tips that might help:
– The skin surrounding the stoma should be clean and dry before applying a new bag. Try and avoid using any oil based creams as oily skin doesn’t help with adhesion.
– When cleaning the skin around the stoma, cover the stoma with a tissue to catch any output and keep the skin clean and dry.
– Avoid using wet wipes or baby wipes as they can interfere with adhesion.
– If you have a lot of hair on the skin surrounding the stoma consider shaving it off. While shaving, protect the stoma with a tissue to prevent causing damage to the stoma. Note, sometimes shaving can cause skin irritation too, we suggest only shaving on alternate weeks to protect your skin.
If your bag is becoming unstuck during use consider:
– is it happening after bathing or during periods of activity? Or is the baseplates edges sticking to clothes?
– Consider trying flange extenders that can help with baseplate edge adhesion.
– If lifting is happening around your stoma, we suggest speaking to your stoma care nurse as it might be due to leaks or an uneven pouching surface.
In the meantime, a seal may be able to help both adhesion and security around your stoma, or a barrier film can also help with bag adhesion.
Output under your baseplate is called a leak and if left unresolved you could end up with damaged or sore skin. It can happen for a number of reasons, such as looser output or an ill-fitting baseplate, but it’s always best to get to the bottom of it and understand why the leak is happening.
Check that the cut-out hole in the stoma bag is the right size. If your stoma isn’t a consistent shape, it can be difficult to get that right sizing, plus your stoma can change shape and size over time.
Ensure that the baseplate is sitting flush to your skin with no rasied parts. If the baseplate isn’t completely secure this can create leaks paths.
We would always recommend considering a seal as part of a secure routine as this will absorb moisture and stop it from reaching the skin for added security and confidence.
Removing your bag from the skin can cause damage to the skin on your abdomen if it’s pulled quickly or with force. We recommend using an adhesive remover for the baseplate and gently peeling it away slowly away from your body.
Our adhesive remover is skin friendly and available as a spray or a wipe, which dries quickly.
The skin around your stoma may be uneven due to creases or folds, this can vary from person to person but is very common if you have lost or gained weight and if there is any scarring from your surgery.
Uneven skin can cause your bag to not sit snugly against your skin, which may lead to leakages or sore skin.
Creating a flat surface by filling in dips and creases before applying the pouch will help to prevent leaks or sore skin using either seals or a paste such as eakin Cohesive® paste. A flatter skin surface may also be achieved by stretching the crease or skin fold before applying a bag or accessory product.
Speak to your stoma care nurse about your baseplate as a convex baseplate may be more suitable if your stoma is within skin folds too. A baseplate with flutes might also shape more securing to uneven skin.
The term parastomal hernia is used to describe a bulge or swelling of the area under or around your stoma. If you have a hernia, sometimes it can impact the fit of your products.
Firstly, speak to your stoma care nurse about your hernia. Often, stomas can seem closer to skin level (flush) or dip into the skin a little bit more (retracted) and therefore a soft convex baseplate that gently spouts the stoma into the bag would be more suitable than a flat baseplate.
Here’s some other things that may help:
– The shape and size of the stoma may change more due to a hernia. So measure your stoma regularly to ensure your bag accurately fits the size of the stoma.
– A more flexible baseplate will achieve a better fit so consider a product with flutes.
– You may want to consider the use of a thin seal that doesn’t put too much pressure on your abdomen, under your baseplate.
– You may also consider an adjustable belt or support belt for security.
Sometimes the first bag you choose or is recommended to you by your nurse doesn’t feel quite right in the longer term. Your body or needs change over years, what once was your go-to bag, might not be feeling quite right. Plus stoma care is constantly innovating – you’re more than entitled to explore new options!
We always recommend speaking to your stoma care nurse about what’s right for you especially if you’re considering a switch from a flat to a convex bag. You can also order samples to try a few different option to see what feels best. What most important is your comfort, security and that you feel more in control.
Finding a perfect fit is the first step to security and confidence.
If the hole is too big, the skin around the stoma will be exposed to the output and at risk of skin damage.
If the hole is too small, the bag will not adhere securely to the skin and if could feel uncomfortable and restrictive around your stoma.
In your box of bags, you should find a measuring guide. We suggest measuring your stoma weekly as lots of things can impact it’s size. Then use the cutting guide to accurately mark out your baseplate.
If you’re concerned you can’t cut your bag accurately, there are pre-cut option available. Or, you might want to consider a mouldable seal you can fit in and around your stoma easily. So if your baseplate is a cut a little too big, there’s no need to worry, the seal acts like a second line of defence!
