Christmas with a stoma: what to expect

Your first Christmas with a stoma can feel like a big milestone. It’s a mix of joy and nerves as you navigate a new routine in the middle of a busy season. We are here to reassure you that it’s completely normal to feel that way and with a little preparation, your festive season can be just as enjoyable as before!

The holidays can be overwhelming at the best of times so it’s perfectly ok to take restful moments, skip certain events or let someone else take charge of dinner prep. Listening to your energy levels is key.

From clothing choices to food decisions, your first festive season with a stoma might involve some experimenting – this is all part of getting to know your new normal. Small steps and some patience will help you feel more confident as you go.

Whether you’re visiting family or just hosting at home, having a small stoma kit close by with spare pouches, wipes and disposal bags will help you feel more in control.

Stick to foods that you know sit well with you, especially on Christmas Day. If you want to try something new, keep portions small and take your time! It can also help to make a small list of festive foods you’d like to try and note how they sit with you, so you can build confidence over time. Just be mindful of foods like brussels sprouts, nuts or very fibrous vegetables, and introduce them slowly if you’re unsure.

If loved ones offer to help then let them. Whether it’s carrying shopping, doing the cooking or simply giving you some space to rest, support makes a big difference during your recovery and adjustment on your stoma journey. Letting others help does not make you weak, it actually shows strength in accepting support and gives you more space to focus on healing and allowing yourself to enjoy the festive moments.

The last thing you want over the festive period is to realise you’re running low on essentials. It’s a good idea to check your supplies ahead of time and make sure you have everything you need ahead of Christmas and the busy festive period.

Even with the changes, the season is still yours to enjoy. Focus on the moments that matter, celebrate the progress you’ve made so far on your stoma journey and let yourself feel proud of how far you’ve come!
